Commonly asked questions when a loved one dies out of state.

Q. What do I do when a death occurs away from the New York area and the family wants to have the funeral and burial in the New York metropolitan area?

Q. How will the deceased be transported to New York?

A. The most common method of transportation today is by air, Transportation by air is the fastest and the most economical manner of transportation. In most instances, a funeral in New York can be held within 24 to 36 hours after the death has occurred.

Q. What are the costs when the death occurs away from the New York area and the family intends to have funeral services and burial in the New York metropolitan area?

A. There are no fixed costs. Charges will vary from State to State. The present costs to us by an Out-of-State Funeral Director for services, when engaged by us, range from approximately $395.00 to $650.00. (The amount we are charged by the Out-of-State Funeral Director is exactly the amount you are required to reimburse us). The following services are performed by the Out-of-State Funeral Director:

  1. Removal of the deceased from the place of death
  2. Preparation of the deceased for transporting to a New York metropolitan area airport
  3. Providing a minimum light weight transportation container (to keep the cost of air transportation to a minimum)
  4. Arranging for all required documents and permits in the City where the death has occurred.
  5. Obtaining airline space for the deceased
  6. Notifying our offices in New York, via long distance telephone calls of time and airport of arrival of the deceased.
  7. Transportation of the deceased to an airport in the City where the death has occurred

Q. Are there any other costs in addition to the above?

A. Yes. In addition to the above costs, you will also have the cost of the Air Transportation. Transportation costs will vary, depending upon the distance from New York to the City that the deceased is being transported from and the weight of the deceased and the transportation container.

For Example: transportation costs by air at the present time from Florida to New York City using a minimum light weight transportation container range from approximately $250.00 to $375.00.

Q. Does this now take care of all the costs?

A. No! These costs are only the charges for having provided the required necessary services in the City where the death has occurred and transporting the deceased from that City to a New York metropolitan area airport.

Q. After the deceased has arrived in New York, what other services will have to be provided?

A. When the deceased has arrived in New York, arrangements will have to be completed at our Funeral Home for the following services:

  1. Removal of the deceased from the airport  by Cadillac Hearse to the Chapel
  2. Preparation and care of the deceased for interment in the New York area
  3. Use of the preparation room.
  4. Arranging and supervision of the funeral and the interment, and providing all the required New York State Licensed Funeral Directors and other personnel.
  5. Use of the Chapel facilities.
  6. Aiding the family in the selection of a casket.
  7.  Cadillac Hearse to the cemetery
  8. Cadillac Limousine to the cemetery (If required by the family)
  9. Supplying of burial garments (if requested by the family).
  10. Securing of any required permits and documents.
  11. Arranging for the furnishing of any religious services requested by the family.
  12. Placing of death notices in local or out of town newspapers.
  13. Arranging with the cemetery to open the grave for the interment.
  14. Ordering copies of transcripts* requested by the family. (*certified copies of the death certificate)

Preparing and filing the necessary forms or documents for organization or government benefits. For example, Veterans Administration Burial Allowance, Social Security Death.

Q. Can I be sure that the costs will not increase in the future?

A. No! The illustrations given are based upon today's approximate costs, It is impossible to know today what costs might be in the future. Service costs, air transportation costs, and all other costs can be expected to change in the future. We can only promise you That Our Family Funeral Homes will make every effort to keep our costs down and provide the finest funeral service to the family.
