Transporting Crematory Containers
on Airplanes
Certain Transportation Security Administration (TSA) procedures affect the transportation of crematory containers on airplanes as carry-on luggage or checked baggage. An air travel passenger is allowed to carry on a crematory container, but it must pass through the airport's x-ray machine. If the container is
made of a material that prevents the screener from clearly being able to see what is inside, then the container will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. Instead, it will be transported as checked baggage, provided it is successfully screened by the TSA. NOTE: Some airlines do not allow cremated remains as checked baggage, so air travel passengers should check with the air carrier before attempting to transport a crematory container in checked baggage.
TSA is currently suggesting that families use a temporary or permanent crematory container made of a lighter weight material such as wood or plastic that can be successfully x-rayed.
The Staff of THE FLYNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOMES is partnering with the TSA to assist families who are traveling with crematory containers. As a TSA partner, ALL OF THE FLYNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOMES will transfer cremated remains from a temporary container to a permanent container free of charge. This complimentary service is provided to the traveling public so that air travel passengers can pass through TSA security checkpoints with temporary crematory containers and upon final destination have the remains transferred to permanent containers by their local TSA Funeral Home Partners.
